Strauss Celebration: Horn Concerto No. 1, Moonlight Music, and Quintets by August Klughardt and Johannes Brahms.

The Mill Ave Chamber Players continues their first season at the Central United Methodist Church with the celebration of Richard Strauss’ 150th birthday. This concert will include works that commemorate his great influence as a composer, including his Horn Concerto No. 1, Moonlight Music, and the Quintet by August Klughardt, a contemporary of Strauss.

Richard Strauss wrote his first Horn Concerto (1882) very early in his composition career, owing much to the fact that his father, Franz Strauss, was principal horn of the Court Opera in Munich and considered Germany's leading virtuoso at the time.

Moonlight Music (1942) comes from last opera of Strauss: Capriccio, Op. 85, subtitled "A Conversation Piece for Music," takes a look at the question: which is the greater art, poetry or music?

August Klughardt's Quintet (1898) is a pillar of the woodwind quintet repertoire. Symphonic in scale, this four movement composition follows very much in texture and style to the music of Johannes Brahms and the early compositions of Richard Strauss.
